Between 1931 & 1934 Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow were well known criminals. On August 5, 1932, Barrow, Hamilton and Everett Milliigan were drinking alcohol at a country dance in Springtown, OK, when a Sheriff and his Deputy approchated them. Barrow opened fire, killing the Deputy and gravely wounding the Sheriff. It was the first killing of a lawman by Barrow and his gang. Barrow (age 25) and Parker (age 23) were ambushed and killed on May 23, 1934, on a rural road in Bienville Parish, LA.

This NJ Essex Co. SD - Special Deputy Sheriff (SDS) - patch was worn during the 1930s until the early 60s. Back then a sheriff would hand out SDS badges and IDs to friends, relatives & political supporters. The badges held no police powers. The practice came under scrutiny in 1935 after the murder of mobster Dutch Schultz. He and a few of his henchmen were gunned down in a restaurant in Newark/NJ. One of the henchmen had a SDS badge. Schultz lingered for 22 hours before dying of peritonitis.
