Der Bezirk Johnson in Illinois wurde im Jahre 1812 gegründet und ist nach Richard M. Johnson benannt, der ein U.S. Kongressabgeordneter aus Kentucky war. Im Jaher 1813 kommandierte Johnson ein Regiment aus Kentucky in der Schlacht an der Themse, nach der er behauptete, Tecumseh, ein Häuptling und Krieger der Shawnee, im Nahkampf getötet zu haben.
